What Kind Of Man Inserts Himself Into Old Print Ads??
What kind of man inserts himself into old print ads? A humorous illustrator. Uh… me, for example. And look at the admiring glances I’m getting!!
I guess women just can’t resist a guy with a pencil neck…
It all began when I stumbled across an old Playboy Magazine promo (see below). The temptation was too much.
I was only going to paste in my head for a quick joke, but decided to get fancy and see how “seamless” I could make it. I used Photoshop’s Liquify tool to caricature myself, complete with pencil neck. What’s scary is how natural the shoulders looked after I Liquified them to fit the neck.
I’m not sure what the guy’s holding. Googling “Beacon’s” did not produce any helpful results. But it looked like it could be a portfolio case– and after adding a stenciled hint and lots of coffee stains, it did look like one!
I added new copy at the bottom, and splashed on a few coffee stains there as well. After blending all the changes into the darkish original, I flattened the image and brightened the whole thing with a simple Curves adjustment. Here’s the Before and After:
And here’s the revised ad by itself. I do seem to be laying it on rather thick… : )
What do you think? Is it a successful photo manipulation? Am I blessed with more
than my share of manly charm? Hope you’ll leave a comment.

Mark,
You have outdone yourself, sir! Absolutely one of your best Photoshop transformations. Love it! I think many people would love to be morphed into their favorite magazine.
And if I’m not mistaken, I think the lady in the back is giving you the eye. Nice.

My dear fellow! Coming from a suave, sophisticated, and debonair guy like yourself, that means a lot– thanks a heap!
Yes, that woman in the back is giving me the eye– good thing she’s too vain to wear her glasses!! : )

I love this. Seriously- the vaguely self-deprecating angle on an ad which, frankly seems to be taking its product way too seriously is just hilarious. I love your work!
