That Face Looks Familiar… Good Lord! It’s Me!!

November 30, 2011

I got a package in the mail the other day. I opened it up, and what to my wondering eyes did appear… but this!portrait of illustrator Mark Armstrong by Canadian artist Scott Hamilton, carbon transfer and acrylic on 4-ply rag board

Yes, ’twas a portrait of yours truly, and I’ve rarely made a better impression– which ain’t easy with a face like mine.

I’ve met so many nice people writing this blog. They all seem to be so giving and talented. One of these is a Canadian artist named Scott Hamilton who signs his work Artboy68. Scott’s a portrait artist who works in a variety of mediums.

He based the above portrait on my gravatar photo. He printed it out, used carbon paper
to trace the high-contrast areas onto rag board, then painted the portrait using acrylics. I was surprised and delighted. When he asked if I’d like the original, I said yes indeed.

Scott is currently engaged on an ambitious project called 100 Portraits. I was Lucky #13. At this writing, he’s completed 38 of 100, and you can view all the portraits on his Artboy68 blog.

His pencil drawings have a warm, accessible look. Here are a couple of good examples:

portrait drawn by Canadian artist Scott Hamilton, aka Artboy68, done in colored pencil

humorous portrait by Canadian artist Scott Hamilton, also known as Artboy68, pencil drawing

Another colorful acrylic:painting by Canadian artist Scott Hamilton, aka Artboy68, acrylic on panel

This last example creates a definite mood– very ethereal, mysterious, compelling.

Scroll down to watch Scott do a “speed drawing” of this particular portrait. Great choice of music, too– it complements his light, upbeat touch.portrait by Canadian artist Scott Hamilton, aka Artboy68, colored pencil drawing

    Wow, that’s so amazing!

The portrait he has done of you reminds me of Pop Art a bit. I think it’s because of the bold colours. But it’s striking, strong, and awesome — just like the person it’s of! ^__^

Think it’s wonderful to see the process in the video. Must have taken such a long time to do but the short time the video films it, it captures the whole essence of the artist.

    Absolutely love it =]

Ha! Many thanks, Sabine. Your “striking, strong, and awesome– just like the person” made me flip my old moth-eaten Beatle wig!! I’ll be grinning about that till after New Year’s… : )

Very glad you enjoyed the post and video. Your support and your striking, strong, and awesome artistic presence here are sincerely appreciated!! : )

I had a portrait done when I was younger. It’s a good likeness but I don’t think it captured any essense of me. I like Scott’s style very much. Watching the pencil drawing and shading process in the video was a terrific experience. Thanks so much for posting that.

Ah! I wasn’t surprised to hear about your portrait. Yours is a mysterious elusive essence, difficult to capture– all part of the enduring TimeThief Mystique, I believe… : )

Yes, Scott has a great technique, and watching that video is a joyful experience. Always good to see you, TT, glad you enjoyed the post!

Love it and enjoyed his work. Thanks for sharing it, Mark!

I wish I could do the same, LOL. Unfortunately I am not very good at all in doing art like this 😀

    Nice work 🙂

Glad you enjoyed the post, Inge. I think we’re all envious of Scott’s ability to do portraits. But hey, you’re a master photographer– you can’t be good at everything!! : )

There’s still time!! Go to Scott’s 100 Portraits page here, then scroll down and leave a comment saying you’d like to be included. Of course you’ll have to supply him with a photo of yourself to work from. Maybe you could post one on an untitled blog page and send him the page URL– just a suggestion. : )

What?? Another artist willing to take on my face?? I had no idea the world was filled with such recklessness… : )

Maybe you could do one of those Elvis-on-velvet things. You know– like they sell in old gas station parking lots… : )

Yes, it is a great project. I know Mr. Hamilton has acquired a lot of fans who are cheering him on as he closes in on his 100th portrait. I’ve enjoyed being part of it.

Thanks a lot for checking in, I appreciate your support!

Great work! 🙂 I particularly like the last two portraits.

Yep, have had my portrait done, rather too often really as my mother was an artist and most of the people I knew while growing up were artists too. The most curious was someone who thought (as did many people) that I looked like the Mona Lisa because when I was younger I rarely smiled and when I did it was a sort of ‘don’t know if I really want to’ kind of smile, and put that in a painting of me!

Yes, indeed: Scott Hamilton has done some truly beautiful portraits– he has a very distinctive touch.

So art runs in your family… that often seems to be the case. You are certainly carrying on that tradition with your own striking and unique style.

Yes… I can see a certain enigmatic quality in your smile. In fact, I’m going to look for you the next time I visit the Louvre… : )
