That Face Looks Familiar… Good Lord! It’s Me!!
I got a package in the mail the other day. I opened it up, and what to my wondering eyes did appear… but this!
Yes, ’twas a portrait of yours truly, and I’ve rarely made a better impression– which ain’t easy with a face like mine.
I’ve met so many nice people writing this blog. They all seem to be so giving and talented. One of these is a Canadian artist named Scott Hamilton who signs his work Artboy68. Scott’s a portrait artist who works in a variety of mediums.
He based the above portrait on my gravatar photo. He printed it out, used carbon paper
to trace the high-contrast areas onto rag board, then painted the portrait using acrylics. I was surprised and delighted. When he asked if I’d like the original, I said yes indeed.
Scott is currently engaged on an ambitious project called 100 Portraits. I was Lucky #13. At this writing, he’s completed 38 of 100, and you can view all the portraits on his Artboy68 blog.
His pencil drawings have a warm, accessible look. Here are a couple of good examples:

This last example creates a definite mood– very ethereal, mysterious, compelling.

Wow, that’s so amazing!
The portrait he has done of you reminds me of Pop Art a bit. I think it’s because of the bold colours. But it’s striking, strong, and awesome — just like the person it’s of! ^__^
Think it’s wonderful to see the process in the video. Must have taken such a long time to do but the short time the video films it, it captures the whole essence of the artist.

I had a portrait done when I was younger. It’s a good likeness but I don’t think it captured any essense of me. I like Scott’s style very much. Watching the pencil drawing and shading process in the video was a terrific experience. Thanks so much for posting that.

Yes, it is a great project. I know Mr. Hamilton has acquired a lot of fans who are cheering him on as he closes in on his 100th portrait. I’ve enjoyed being part of it.

Yep, have had my portrait done, rather too often really as my mother was an artist and most of the people I knew while growing up were artists too. The most curious was someone who thought (as did many people) that I looked like the Mona Lisa because when I was younger I rarely smiled and when I did it was a sort of ‘don’t know if I really want to’ kind of smile, and put that in a painting of me!
