See The Caricature. Pretty Caricature. Think, Think, Think. Who It Is??

June 10, 2013

I did a post back in March that featured some old caricatures. I challenged readers to guess who they were, and said a prayer that people would actually recognize some of them… : )

The post was well received, and I’m happy to say there were some correct guesses. So it’s time for an encore. See if you can identify the following idiot celebrities.

Answers at end of post.

caricature of singer Bob Dylan and television talk show host, comedian, and singer Jimmy Fallon

caricature of movie star Sandra Bullock famous for role as undercover cop in beauty pageant in movie comedy Miss Congeniality

caricature of Yoko Ono and Beatle John Lennon as hippies holding flowers and late North Korean dictator and ruler Kim Jong-il who liked to play nuclear chicken

caricatures of rock musicians Walter Becker and Donald Fagen of group Steely Dan shown with deaf human ear using waxy cotton swab as cane

caricatures of American tennis stars Andy Roddick, James Blake, Robby Ginepri

1. Singer Bob Dylan, and talk show host and comedian, Jimmy Fallon.

2. Movie star Sandra Bullock, who had a big hit as an FBI agent working undercover at a beauty pageant in the film Miss Congeniality.

3. Yoko Ono and John Lennon, and the late North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il, who died in 2011 and was succeeded by his son Kim Jong-un. Like his father, young Kim seems to enjoy playing “nuclear chicken” with South Korea and the West.

4. Walter Becker and Donald Fagen (L-R), core members of rock group Steely Dan. In the above drawing, they seem to have encountered a deaf ear.

5. American tennis professionals Andy Roddick, James Blake, and Robby Ginepri, circa 2004. Roddick, who once achieved a World No. 1 ranking, retired in 2012. Blake and Ginepri are still active. The caricatures were for an article which playfully cast the players as certain types: Roddick as a fashion plate; Blake as an intellectual; Ginepri as a hippie.

Did anyone get Kim Jong-il? That one was tough, since his son, Kim Jong-un, the current ruler, sports the same distinctive haircut. OK, if you just said The North Korea Guy, you get half a point… : )

Did anyone notice the tennis ball globe? Did it make you feel kind of warm and, uh, fuzzy?

Whoa! Quick work, and nicely done, sir! I think that deserves at least two pickles, and I’m gonna send ’em along if I can ever get the lid off this jar!! : )

      Many thanks for your support!

Ah! Why am I not surprised to hear it?? I suspect he’s already angling to play him in Kim Jong: The Musical, which you are no doubt hard at work writing the music for– gonna be a great show!! : )

      Thanks a heap, Mia!

Got half of #1, and then #2 and #3. No pickles for me.
Where do I send those dozen donuts, sir? What’s that? Busted! See, I get notifications of your new posts, and this is what the cache quoted to me:
“11 caricatures. Your job: identify them. If you get all eleven, you win a jar of pickles. If you miss even one, you must buy Mr. Armstrong a dozen donuts. Will you accept the challenge? Then please make sure you have some money on you and proceed…”

So, where do I send your donuts? Krispy Kreme delivers, don’t they? What’s that? Heavenly donuts that will fill you with light? Ah yes, you remember I said I hope heaven has donuts like that, but I don’t think Krispy Kreme has them. Will jelly donuts or bismarks do?

Ha! You had me laughing on that one, Jak. If I’da been eatin’ a donut, I’da spit it out– close call!

Yes, I’m going to have to have a word with the idiot who writes those foolish new post “teasers” that my subscribers receive. Pickles, donuts– he’s obviously got a screw loose. This is what happens when you delegate tasks when you’re self-employed… : P

Sounds like you did pretty well, I’d say the pickles and donuts cancelled each other out– thanks for your very good-humored comment! : )

I only got three – Dylan, Ono/Lennon, and Kim Jong-il. Although I did know the last group were tennis players. But once I saw the answers, I could see them all perfectly! Nice job, Mark. I’m a big Steely Dan/Fagan fan, so I was a bit miffed I missed that one.

Three?? I’m giving you credit for four! Ono and Lennon might have only had one brain between them, but they still count as two people!! : )

I feel kinda guilty about the tennis guys. Let’s face it: tennis guys as almost as obscure as illustrators!! : (

You did great. Besides, you’re the only person I know who can write a chapter of her latest thriller on a mobile phone while going 100 mph on a motorcycle. Hey, they don’t call you Steely Maddie fer nuthin’!! : )

I’m hoping one day you’ll do a piece on culture clashes among different cyclist types: racer/roadies, mountain bikers, fixed speed hipsters, cyclists in heels and chic dresses, etc.

Ha! I think anyone who recognizes John and Yoko is showing their age– including yours truly! (OK, they could write songs and poetry and pose naked, but could they ride a bicycle for miles and miles? Not that I ever heard of!!)

Clashes among different cyclist types… fascinating concept. I thought there were only two types: the ones who wore bike shorts and $75 jerseys, and everybody else, including the guys with rubber bands on their trouser legs. Cyclists in heels?? I can see I still have much to learn!

Thanks as always, Jean, for stopping by! : )
