I Updated My Portfolio– I Invite You To Take A BRIEF Look

September 9, 2013

cartoon guy wearing dirty stained briefs underwear and purple socks and pointing with his finger

I recently revamped all my Portfolio Thumbnails in the sidebar. It was long overdue.

There’s a lot of new work, some covered in recent posts, some not. I deleted older pieces, and consolidated all my celebrity “birthday clock” caricatures into a single group.

As mentioned in a recent post, I’ve decided photo-illustrations aren’t for me. I enjoy them, but I do better when I draw all the elements, rather than hunt around for bits and pieces. I’ve retained ten of my favorite photo-illustrations, and grouped them at the bottom of the thumbnails.

I invite you to take a look at some of the work.

The little guy in his underwear is from an old Valentine card design. I’ll leave the rest to your imagination.  : )

Did you enjoy any of the illustrations in particular?

Is it probably a good thing we don’t all walk around in our underwear?

Hope you’ll leave a comment.blank vertical space, 24 pixels high

An excellent Mark idea to the bone!

My dear, dear Marina!! You’ve got me grinning like a bug here!! Do bugs grin? I must look that up in my Big Book Of Insect Facial Tics… : )

Great Zeus! I see you looked at about 10,000 illos, and Liked them all!! You have exceeded all known kindness parameters, and have just been voted onto Mount Olympus as The Goddess of Benevolence!! Well, well, I can’t say I’m surprised… : )

That kind of support, from a great artist and painter like yourself, means an awful lot. Which explains why I’m wearing my special red-and-white polka-dot shorts. I only get them out for really big celebrations. Thank you, Marina!!! : )

Ok then, I’ll make sure those polka dots get to be permanent!!! Very well deserved!!!! 🙂
Now you mention it – I do have a second name, Artemis and do you know what she was in ancient Greek mythology? The goddess of hunting [Diana]. I can’t say I like it, but there you have it – she is also a semi-goddess but we can skip that one! 😆
Seriously, I admire your work and sense of humor.
Keep it up! …as if you can do otherwise!!! 😉

The Goddess of Hunting– yes, it fits: as a painter and composer, you are always hunting for new creative challenges, and you always bag your quarry. Your fans get to hang your hunting trophies (paintings) on their walls, or listen to them (compositions) on their CD player!

I am energized by your kind support. I shall slap on my pith helmet, hitch up my shorts, and keep marching thru the illustration jungle– thank you, Marina!!! : )

Glad to see you’re tidying up. I would have a tremendous challenge trying to narrow down my favorite Mark Armstrong illustrations. To me, they’re all first class.

Now, go put some clothes on. 🙂

I feel light-headed! I’m in a swoon! I’m as giddy as a leprechaun who’s drunk too much green Koolaid!! There’s only one possible explanation: I’ve just received one of Judy Berman’s outrageous compliments!! Really now– how lucky can a minimally-attired illustrator get??

Thank you, dear Judy! You are a first-class friend, and you have a very discerning eye for fine art, if I may say so… : )

Yes, it is a little chilly in here– time to put on more layers. Now where did I put my long underwear…?? : P

Mark, Great way to display your wide variety of illustrations. I really love the chocolate truck because chocolate is the base of my food pyramid, and so a chocolate truck “choc full” and headed my way is absolutely a delight. My favorite of your illustrations is the one about love, because it shows that real love is there for the struggle, as well as the romance. Great job, Mark!

What a wonderful comment, Jayne, and it means a lot coming from an accomplished artist like yourself. Yes, I keep hoping one of those chocolate trucks will pull into my driveway– and I wouldn’t mind several deliveries a day, either!

I especially appreciate your comment about the Love illustration. Yes, our popular culture is quick to extol the superficial aspects of love; I was glad to have a chance to convey the real thing, as you put it so well, which is there for the struggle.

Thanks again for your lovely comment, it truly made my day! : )

A nice little late spring clean can be a good thing, and has certainly brought out all the goodness from what is tucked underneath the drawers.

I can never pick just one of your works, Mark, they are all just too good!

And it is certainly a good thing we don’t all walk around in our underwear, especially in the soon-to-be Winter months!

A late spring cleaning– ha! I like that– makes me sound like I’m only running a little late, instead of way behind!!

Thanks for your wonderfully kind words, Sabine, so very much appreciated. You always give me a smile and a boost.

Yes, I can feel a definite chill in the air– I’ll soon be doing my Frankenstein Walk, because I’m wearing so many layers!! : )

Ha! Yes, pants are overrated. At least that was the prevailing opinion at the last Bermuda Shorts convention I attended… : )

The image of a jury locked in a room debating the merits of underwear really made me laugh. I can see it being made into a movie: 12 Angry Men In Their Skivvies… : P

Good to see you, sir, many thanks for your good-humored comment!

Don’t tell anyone, but I’m wearing Zoot Underwear underneath it. No, I can’t go into any details at this time… : P

Thank you for looking at and Liking so many of the new portfolio pieces!!– most sincerely appreciated, Jen. I feel like I’ve been ratified by Australia’s preeminent artist and craftsperson– no wonder there’s this big smile on my face!!

You are most welcome to snoop around here on rainy weekends, or even partly-cloudy weekends, dear Tutti. Of course, if I find muddy footprints on some of my work, I shall have to give you a sound scolding!! : )

Thanks for the tip about the Like buttons. I put on a hair net and a face mask and rubber gloves, and went in and cleaned everything up. Now I’m ready for millions of new fans to Like my work and pay me homage… : )

A Love button– what a great idea!! I think I’ll start wearing a tee-shirt with a big Love button on it. No wait, bad idea– people would be punching me in the stomach all the time, expressing their love… : P

Awwww…your photo-illustrations are so good! But I understand about preferring one kind of work over another. It’s got to feel right.

Re: everyone walking around in their underwear. You’ve made a fundamental assumption there….no comment.

The names? Oh, right! Must confess, I’ve never actually touched hot paper fresh off a printing press, tho I did hold a warm newspaper once, that I’d gotten out of a vending machine with direct sun exposure… : )

As mentioned, I did enjoy doing the photo-illustrations, but they always seemed a bit labored; also, restrictive. I admire people with multiple styles, but alas, one risks introducing uncertainty into a client’s mind. Clients need to know what to expect, I think artists need to concede that point…

A fundamental assumption… yes, yes, I see– I’m assuming that everyone wears underwear… Oh, dear. I am suddenly seized with the gravest misgivings. The world is not ready for such an experiment. At least I’m not!! : P
