Looking For The Right Stuff? You Don’t Need To Go To Oz To Find It

April 26, 2013

It’s been a tough couple of weeks for Americans: a terrorist bombing in Boston, and a tragic fire in West, Texas.

Both incidents showed us what real heroism looks like.

I hope this illustration doesn’t seem trite or disrespectful. I believe humor helps us cope.
It also helps us say things that aren’t easy to express.BlankVertSpace.8pixels

My thanks to the police, firefighters, first responders, and ordinary citizens of Boston and West, Texas who showed the rest of us the human spirit at its finest.

Have you ever seen a local community come together in response to a tragedy?

Ever thanked a policeman, fireman, or emergency squad person just for being there?

Hope you’ll leave a comment.blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

Brains, courage, and heart. A fitting tribute, and none of it would I consider trite or disrespectful. Between my time at city hall, and various life experiences, I’ve had the pleasure to understand local law enforcement and emergency response professionals a little better. They do indeed have my admiration and gratitude (even when their visits to my home are stressful).

Mark, we certainly could use a little humor after what’s happened. I’m sure the folks in Boston and West, Texas appreciate your cheerful illustration. The lion, tin man, and the scarecrow need search no farther than those locals for courage, heart and brains They do have the right stuff.

Many thanks, Judy! That means a lot coming from someone who clearly demonstrates the “right stuff.” Seriously. : )

Many thanks for that supportive comment, T.K. Humor can be a tricky business sometimes, but I do think it has tremendous power to do good. Thank you for being a reflection of that! : )

No, Mark, I don’t believe it disrespectful at all..!
Tragedy does bring out the best, and unfortunately, the worst in us. It was so uplifting to see the heroism of so many on that fateful day. We hear it so often; it is those very people whose lives are put at the greatest risk. I can remember a time when the most dangerous event a fireman faced was ‘fire’. Today his work (and the work of so many ‘service men and women’) has taken on a much wider scale for many of these brave individuals. We as a society have so much to thank them for; and yet it seems so trite in return for what they do.
    A wonderful tribute, Mark; indeed….

Thank you for that very thoughtful comment, Carolyn. It does indeed seem quite hopeless trying to adequately thank those who serve in our armed forces, our police, firefighters, emergency squads, and other first responders. It’s hard to take in the enormity of their sacrifice sometimes. At least these tragedies serve to remind us of what we too often take for granted.

Thanks as always for your very kind support! : )
