How To Make A Video Without Film

June 19, 2017

Music videos have been around for a long time now.

Funny to think of them as an early form of content marketing. But that’s what they are: a band is a brand.

Music videos have a familiar problem, however: most of them look the same.

An established brand loses points for being boring. But you can’t afford to look the same if you’re a lesser brand trying to attract attention.

A recent study found that consumers respond to content that’s funny, useful, beautiful, and inspiring. I tried to incorporate those four elements in this promotional video I did for The Mustachios.

You can watch the video at full-size by clicking the YouTube icon at the lower right of the screen.blank vertical space, 24 pixels high

blank vertical space, 24 pixels highHow do you make a video without shooting any film? By combining bits and pieces of illustration, caricature, animated GIFs, and vintage photographs.

The vintage photos are all copyright-free. I downloaded them from the Internet Archive Book Images, part of The Commons Project run by Flickr.

I love vintage photos. I think everyone does. They usually need some help, tho. I used Apple’s Pixelmator image-editing software to clean them up and add color. Grateful that your fab illustrations encouraged me to watch the video. Loved the band and as always your visual playfulness.

Hi, Alison! Please accept my abject apologies for such a late reply. I have no excuse, I deserve a kick in the pants, and that’s no joke. Many thanks for your very kind comment, most sincerely appreciated.

Yes, great band, a real family band: dad on guitar, mom on harmonica, son on drums, daughter on vocals. I’ve never seen them perform together, but I’ve known Tom Horsky, the guitarist, for many years, and have seen him sing and play on several occasions. A phenomenal blues guitarist. He’s recorded 3 CD’s, including “The Mustachios,” and I have them all. Another case of great talent inexplicably flying under the radar.

Hope you’re well and doing A-OK! Thanks again for your very kind support, and do accept my apology for taking so long to respond. 😔🔫

Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, great song, and a great album. Tom Horsky, the guitarist and leader of The Mustachios, told me they were trying for a certain vibe: a 1940’s-era smoky blues club in Harlem sound. I’m no musicologist, but it sounds right to me! Thanks for your kind comment, Lily!!
