Creation + Evolution = Illustration

July 15, 2010

I did an illustration for The Partner Channel Magazine, for an article on The Evolution Of Email Marketing. It evolved in a series of steps.blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

Scroll down for the entire sequence, beginning with the rough sketch.blank vertical space, 16 pixels highevolution of man sequence coming out of a computer

importing a photograph of a computer for use in an illustration
computer monitor that looks like it is filled with water

inserting line drawing of evolution of man into a composite illustration

color version of humorous drawing which is a parody of human evolution

using grand canyon type rock formations as background for illustration
evolution of man parody to illustrate development of email marketing
use of familiar email address symbol to represent human ancestor heads

I loved it, but the next-to-last, without the @s was more pleasing to my eyes.
By the way, was the red rock in the background photo in the Valley of Fire, in Nevada, about an hour drive north of Las Vegas?

Thanks, Elliot. And I must agree with you: the @s do seem to spoil the illo in an aesthetic sense. On the other hand, they fit in nicely with the theme of the article, since the ‘at’ symbol is so thoroughly associated with email.

The background photo is of the Wadi Rum desert wilderness area in Southern Jordan. I found the photo on stock.xchng, and you can see the original photo here. Thanks again for stopping by!
