Beware: Phony Shopping Site Using Art Stolen From Yours Truly

September 19, 2023

Evil-looking monster jack-in-the-box popping out of musical Gotcha Box, looking very fiendish

blank vertical space, 16 pixels highNow who’d steal low-res 72dpi images of Mark Armstrong illustrations, post them in an online store, and offer to sell you a nice print of same?blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

blank vertical space, 16 pixels highIf you answered: “Only the filthiest, most greedy evil rotten no-goodniks,” you’d be right.blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

In this case, a lowdown dirty outfit called statloveov.blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

URL: https (colon, slash, slash) statloveov (dot) live.blank vertical space, 24 pixels high

Guess what the name of the store is?blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

“Online Store.”blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

But the only name you’ll actually see on their site is “Shop.”blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

And if you have a question about your order, well, sorry, no phone number, but you can email them at… hot (at) examfreevs.com.blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

Hmm…blank vertical space, 24 pixels high

Long story short: statloveov (dot) live is a scam. Buy anything from them and you can just kiss your money goodbye.blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

blank vertical space, 24 pixels highHere’s the backstory:blank vertical space, 32 pixels high

I have a couple of Google Alerts set up that notify me of any online references to “Mark Armstrong” or “Mark Armstrong Illustration.”blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

I got one the other day titled “Happy Birthday Norman Rockwell By Mark Armstrong.” It caught my eye because I’d recently posted a caricature of Norman Rockwell on my Facebook page.blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

The alert looked peculiar because it referenced a site called escapeauthority (dot) com.blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

I clicked on the alert and here’s what came up:blank vertical space, 16 pixels highblank vertical space, 32 pixels high

blank vertical space, 16 pixels highblank vertical space, 16 pixels highThey stole my image and were advertising it for sale as a print. They even used my name.blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

Bold as brass, as my dear old grandmother used to say.blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

They gave it a rating of 5 stars— gee, thanks fellas, you miserable thieving scum!!blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

Here’s the original August 29th post on my Facebook Page—
I assume that’s where they got it.blank vertical space, 16 pixels highblank vertical space, 16 pixels highblank vertical space, 32 pixels high

Caricature of Norman Rockwell posted by illustrator Mark Armstrong on his Facebook Page on August 29, 2023.

blank vertical space, 16 pixels highblank vertical space, 16 pixels highThanks to Google Alerts, I’ve since discovered they’ve posted other images of mine like this Christmas cover.blank vertical space, 16 pixels highblank vertical space, 16 pixels highblank vertical space, 32 pixels high"I Think I Hear Music" Christmas cover by illustrator Mark Armstrong as it appears on the statloveov.live scam site

blank vertical space, 32 pixels highblank vertical space, 16 pixels highblank vertical space, 16 pixels highI tried typing “Mark Armstrong” into their Search window. I was curious to see how many of my illos they were offering for sale. But it only managed to bring up Louie Armstrong records, Armstrong Flooring products, and a Dog Lovers’ Quilt by a Carol Armstrong.blank vertical space, 24 pixels high

Look at all the good stuff you can buy from “Online Store” (below). How about an Alchemy ATLAS bicycle for only $52.50?? Quite a bargain considering you’d have to pay at least $12,500 for the same bicycle on the Alchemy site.

blank vertical space, 16 pixels highblank vertical space, 16 pixels highHere’s what their About Us page looks like. Note the poor grammar.blank vertical space, 16 pixels highblank vertical space, 32 pixels high

About Us page on the statloveov.live scam site with poor English, fake store street address, fake email address, and no phone number

(Click for larger view)blank vertical space, 40 pixels high

blank vertical space, 16 pixels highThey “only sell new, unopened, unused products that order us directly from the manufacturer.” Uh-huh.blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

“Order us directly” must be a new slang expression for “steal.”blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

Their “powerful customer service team” keeps an eye on things and “sticks to its guideline.” I guess its guideline is not supplying a phone number customers can call, just a dubious email address.blank vertical space, 24 pixels high

I googled their street address: 4315 Benedum Drive New Paltz NY 12561.blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

The first item returned was: “Statloveov Life [sic] Scam Or Genuine…” Clicking on it took me to a findings page posted by a company that investigates suspicious online businesses.blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

Their conclusion: statloveov.live is a scam. Red flags included:blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

–Lots of heavily discount products (consistent with multiple scam sites)
–hot (at) examfreevs.com email address appears on multiple scam sites
–No phone number
–Website name different from domain name

blank vertical space, 40 pixels highWhat to do?blank vertical space, 16 pixels highblank vertical space, 24 pixels high

It’s true that artwork is automatically copyrighted as soon as an artist creates it, but to pursue legal action, I’d have to register the images with the United States Copyright Office.blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

I’d also have to hire an intellectual property lawyer, and my instincts tell me it would be more time, trouble, and money than it’s worth— which is probably what scammers count on.blank vertical space, 24 pixels high

Artists can file a takedown notice with the server or whoever is supporting the scam website. (At the bottom of the statloveov site, it says: “Powered by statloveov.live.”)blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

blank vertical space, 16 pixels highI used hostadvice to try to identify the real host of the statloveov site, and got this very interesting result:blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

“statloveov (dot) live is hidden behind CloudFlare… it is impossible to tell who is hosting this website, because it is hidden behind CloudFlare proxy. No tool on the internet will be able to tell you the hosting company for this website.”blank vertical space, 24 pixels high

blank vertical space, 16 pixels highIt turns out that Cloudflare does not— technically— host websites; it provides “content delivery network services” to those who do host websites.blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

In 2018, the European Union’s Counterfeit and Piracy Watch List identified Cloudflare as a notorious market which engages in, facilitates, or benefits from counterfeiting and piracy.

blank vertical space, 16 pixels highA notorious market is a website or physical market where, according to the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), large-scale intellectual property infringement takes place.blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

One begins to understand why it’s so hard to go after scammers, and why they endure.blank vertical space, 16 pixels highblank vertical space, 24 pixels high

I’d appreciate your sharing this post and helping to spread the word on statloveov and similar scams. It won’t put them out of business, but it will raise awareness.blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

At some future point, someone else is sure to google “Is statloveov a scam?” When they do, I want them to find this post and know the answer is YES.

I googled (actually DuckDuckGo) ‘Is statloveov a scam?’ and this post of yours came up at the top, followed by a few other reviews that suggest the site is a scam.

What a wonderfully kind thing to do!!– thanks so much, Margy, that is really great to hear!!

Yeah, you feel so powerless in a case like this, with legal action sure to be expensive with little chance of any significant results. But I wanted to hit back somehow, hence the post.

Thanks so much for taking the time to verify that it was worth the effort from a search engine standpoint. You are The Best!!— thanks a million for all your kindness and support!! 🙏🥰

    Hi

I’m a UK based photographer selling framed prints through a legitimate company in the US.

Imagine my surprise when I found a website https://nicevrsm.live/ also “selling” an identical framed image of mine at 50% off. Available in one size only – with no size specified! So I did some searching myself and found your post. Their web design and even the wording is exactly the same as the site you encountered. Their physical address in MN is fake too.

I’m planning my own writeup of https://nicevrsm.live/ along with other copyright theft/scams I’ve experienced and will reference/link your post.

    Cheers, Gary

Hi Gary, great to meet you, and thanks so much for your feedback. Sorry to hear you ran into the same theft/scam. I hate to think how insidious the whole business is: they set up a fake site, rip off as many gullible souls as they can, then, after word gets circulating about that particular site, they shut it down and set up another with a new name.

I’m hoping that if enough of us post about our experience, the general parameters of the scam will become more and more well known and fewer people will fall for it. Sad to say, the allure of getting something on the cheap will always be sucker-bait. Thanks again for your feedback, wishing you all the best here!! Cheers, Mark 👍
