W.C. Fields Haikus: How To Turn His 1-Liners into 3-Liners

June 11, 2025

Caricature of comedian W.C. Fields, wearing a straw boater and smoking a cigar. He's saying: "I never drink water. That is the stuff that rusts pipes."

You’ve never heard of W.C. Fields?? You must be younger than 100!!blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

OK, he was even before my time.blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

Here’s an excerpt from his Turner Classic Movies biography:blank vertical space, 24 pixels high

A gambler and card-shark, a gin drinker, and hater of children, iconic actor- comedian W.C. Fields was all these things and more — a pool hustler, a juggler and an ordinary man struggling against life.

Fields spoke directly to what made us human — our dark desires, the unspoken urge for meanness, all the while making us laugh when he got away with it.

William Claude Dukenfield was born on Jan. 29, 1880 and raised in Philadelphia, PA. His mother’s withering asides about neighbors fueled what would become one of Field’s classic bits — smiling openly while delivering tart-tongued comments under his breath.blank vertical space, 24 pixels high

It’s hard not to laugh at Fields’ mocking and sarcastic quips, like the one above about how he never drinks water because it’s the stuff that rusts pipes.blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

For some reason the idea of haikus popped into my head, and I wondered what the quip would sound like in haiku form. So I wrote one:blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

Yup, that’s what I told myself. 🤔🥱😴

blank vertical space, 16 pixels highSo here are 10 of Fields’ best one-liners in haiku form, followed by the actual quip itself — hope you enjoy them!blank vertical space, 16 pixels high

blank vertical space, 16 pixels highIn researching this post, I learned Fields was also a skilled artist who drew cartoons for newspapers, as well as posters for his shows. A cartoonist?? Hey, he’s all right with me!! You can see samples of his work here.

I don’t know if my thoughts are even worth a penny but here you go, “Ka-ching! Ka-Ching!” 😀 I don’t think I ever watched much of anything with WC Fields. I remember catching clips with Field and West on TV when I was a teenager. Those two were quite the characters. Anywho, I enjoyed reading your hiatus and Fields quotes. Have a funtastic weekend!

Ha! Those thoughts certainly were worth a penny– and much more!! 👍💪😅 What a lovely comment, thank you!

I could say the same about Fields, really– I only know him from the occasional old clip on TV. I had occasion to draw his caricature, decided to read up on him a bit, then decided to have some fun with his quips.

Nice to meet you, and thanks so much for your kind comment– wishing you a delightful weekend as well!! 👍🙏😊

I should’ve know this was one of your illustrations. I would love to be able to do caricatures. I did one of Lucy Ball once. It wasn’t too bad of a job for my first attempt. Oh yeah, I did another of Loretta Swit as “Hot Lips”. Still caricatures just isn’t my forte but I’d love for it to be!

Caricatures certainly didn’t come easily to me, and I still struggle sometimes. It helps to go to school on other artists, and the more you do, the better you get. Onward!! 👍😊
